A Brief Biography of Thomas R. Garriga

Having begun his training in the martial arts in 1956 at the age of 11, Tom Garriga has been heavily involved with the martial arts for the vast majority of his life and has been instructing others in various martial arts since 1961, while continuing his own training and education.

Martial Arts Study

In addition to having personally trained & studied in 13 styles other than Wu Ji Chyuan Fa, Mr. Garriga has black belt rankings in 5 other styles; including a 9th degree ranking in American Kenpo where he was a "first generation" black belt under the late Mr. Ed Parker and was the former manager of the International Kenpo Karate Association (IKKA) Headquarters Studio in Pasadena, California.

Military Pedigree

Tom served in the Marines for eight years – with eight military specialties – was a member of Force Recon, and served as an instructor for hand-to-hand & underwater combat for UDT and SEAL Teams at Coronado Amphibous Base towards the end of his service.

Founding of the Institute and Current Status

In 1991, Tom founded Tang Wei Martial Arts Institute, Inc. and began teaching Wu Ji Chyuan Fa to the public while continuing his contracts with some of the government agencies. In order to fulfill a life-long dream of residing in the pacific northwest, in 2000 the studio of the Tang Wei Martial Arts Institute was closed and the continued training of interested students shifted to private lessons during his periodic visits to Utah.

Although he is one of the most respected and knowledgeable instructors and practitioners in the martial arts world, Mr. Garriga is also one of its best-kept secrets.

Other Martial Arts Instruction

Some time after completing his study with the family, he moved to Utah and began to teach Wu Ji Chyuan Fa to interested individuals, as well as continuing to train various government agencies (local, state, and federal) in concepts such as self-defense, marksmanship, de-escalating confrontation, positive control methods, and so forth.

While residing in Utah, Tom continued to provide training and certification for advanced belt rankings in Kenpo and also trained many of the head instructors and owners of various martial art schools throughout Utah in multiple facets of the martial arts, such as: grappling, evasion, weapons, team fighting, multiple opponents, ground fighting, etc.
